FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

If your question isn't here, send us a note. We're happy to talk it through.

Are you part of FMCSA or the Department of Transportation?

No. Pretrip Safety is an independent, privately owned company. We are not affiliated with FMCSA, U.S. DOT or any state agency. We work for carriers, using the same public safety data FMCSA uses.

Do you replace our safety manager?

It's up to you. Some fleets use us as their entire safety department. Others keep their safety manager and hand us the recurring paperwork so that person can focus on drivers and operations.

Do we have to change our ELD or our software?

No. We work from the ELD and records you already have. We just need read access or regular exports.

FMCSA hides property carrier percentiles. How do you know our scores?

The inspections and violations behind the scores are public, and FMCSA publishes how the measures are calculated. We use that to rebuild a close estimate of your standing in each BASIC every month. Your official percentiles are visible when you log in to FMCSA's site, and we're glad to compare the two with you.

Can you get violations removed from our record?

Only when they're wrong. We file DataQs requests for inspections that are inaccurate, such as duplicates, violations assigned to the wrong carrier, or citations dismissed in court. We never promise a removal, and we don't file challenges the record doesn't support.

Do you do the drug and alcohol testing yourselves?

Testing runs through a partner consortium with collection sites and certified labs. We manage your program: random selections, scheduling, Clearinghouse queries and records.

What size fleets do you work with?

We focus on carriers with 20 to 500 trucks. If you're a little outside that range, reach out anyway and we'll tell you honestly whether we're a good fit.

Where are you located?

We're based in San Francisco and work remotely with interstate carriers across the country.

What does it cost?

The Audit-Ready Review is $995, and it's credited to your first month if you continue with us. Managed Compliance is $49 per driver per month, with drug and alcohol lab fees billed separately. Investigation support is quoted per case. See our services for what each one includes.

Are you a law firm?

No. Pretrip Safety provides compliance support services, not legal services. If your situation calls for a lawyer, we'll tell you.
